Distribution characteristics of body mass index (BMI) of freshmen in a university in Jiangxi Province and correlation analysis with related diseases

Abstract:Objective To investigate the distribution characteristics of body mass index (BMI) of freshmen in a university in Jiangxi Province and analyze its correlation with related diseases. Methods Based on the physical examination data of 3 467 freshmen of Class 2020-2021 in a university in Jiangxi Province, the distributions of age, gender, height, weight, serum uric acid concentration, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and others were analyzed, and the associations between BMI and hyperuricemia, hypertension and tachycardia were calculated. Results The proportions of college freshmen with underweight, normal BMI, and overweight were 29.33% (1 017/3 467), 62.97% (2 183/3 467), and 7.7% (267/3 467), respectively, among which the detection of overweight was 14.50% (124/857) in boys and 5.50% (143/2 610) in girls, and the detection of overweight in boys was significantly higher than that in girls (χ2=73.358, P<0.001). The detection rates of hyperuricemia in the underweight, normal BMI, and overweight groups were 8.46%, 14.29%, and 40.07% respectively, with statistically significant differences among these groups (χ2=170.252, P<0.001). The detection rates of hypertension in the underweight, normal BMI, and overweight groups were 2.06%, 2.43%, and 11.99% respectively, with statistically significant differences among these groups (χ2=127.283, P<0.01). The detection rate of tachycardia in the overweight group was 11.61%, which was 3.37 times higher than that in the normal BMI group (3.44%), and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=46.662, P<0.001). Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis showed that BMI was positively correlated with serum uric acid concentration, blood pressure, and resting heart rate level (r=0.200, 0.158, 0.063, P<0.01), and people with high BMI had an increased risk of hyperuricemia, hypertension, and tachycardia. Conclusions The detection rate of overweight among freshmen is high, and these people are usually at risk of higher levels of serum uric acid concentration, blood pressure, and resting heart rate. The above results should attract the attention of the education department and the health department, and they should strengthen the prevention intervention measures for overweight and obesity of college students at an early stage, advocate a healthy lifestyle, and improve the health level of college students.
