Efficacy comparison of hydrochlorothiazide combined with amlodipine or irbesartan in treatment of hypertension in older adults

Abstract：Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of hydrochlorothiazide combined with amlodipine or irbesartan on hypertension in the elderly. Methods From January 2021 to September 2022, 138 elderly patients with hypertension diagnosed and treated by Tongyou Street Community Health Service Center, Jianyang District, Nanping City were divided into observation group and control group, with 69 cases in each group, the control group was treated with hydrochlorothiazide combined with amlodipine, and the observation group was treated with hydrochlorothiazide combined with irbesartan, and after 8 weeks of treatment, the efficacy (total effective rate, blood pressure level) and medication safety of the two groups were compared. Results The total effective rate of the observation group after treatment was 95.65%, which was statistically significant compared with 85.51% in the control group (χ2=4.161, P<0.05). The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels in the observation group were (88.51±6.34) mmHg and (143.72±10.05) mmHg, which were statistically significant compared with (92.37±6.76) mmHg and (148.93±10.46) mmHg in the control group respectively (t=3.460, 2.984, both P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the observation group and the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion Elderly hypertensive patients receiving hydrochlorothiazide combined with irbesartan have a better effect than hydrochlorothiazide combined with amlodipine, more ideal blood pressure control, and a good safety profile.
