Analysis of results of physical examinations of freshmen of medical post-graduate students at a university in Wuhan City

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and hypertension, as well as BMI and liver dysfunction, by analyzing the physical examination results of medical post-graduate freshmen at a university in Wuhan City, so as to provide references for formulating health care strategies for them. Methods A total of 3 368 first-year medical postgraduates from a university in Wuhan City in 2019 and 2020 were selected through cluster sampling method. They were investigated for general information such as height, body mass, blood pressure, and liver function. The detection rates of hypertension and liver function abnormalities in them with BMI categories were analyzed and compared. Results The total detection rate of hypertension among medical post-graduate students was 2.17%, and the detection rates of hypertension among those with low body weight, normal body weight, overweight, and obesity were 1.09% (6/548), 1.61% (37/2 295), 5.00% (21/420), and 8.57% (9/105), respectively, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=42.509, P<0.001). The total detection rate of liver function abnormalities among medical post-graduate freshmen was 2.58%, and the detection rates of liver function abnormalities in these freshmen with low body weight, normal body weight, overweight, and obesity were 0.73% (4/548), 1.83% (42/2 295), 6.19% (26/420), and 14.29% (15/105), respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=91.514, P<0.001). Conclusion The detection rate of hypertension and abnormal liver function among overweight and obese medical post-graduate students at a university in Wuhan is relatively high, and effective measures should be taken to control body weight and reduce the occurrence of hypertension and abnormal liver function.
