Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of hypnotherapy on negative emotions and quality of life in female college students with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Methods A total of 64 female college students with PMS were divided into a hypnosis group (32 students) and a control group (32 students) by the random number method. Both female college students received routine mental health education, and the hypnosis group received 8 targeted hypnotherapy interventions on this basis. The anxiety self-rating scale (SAS), the depression self-rating scale (SDS), and the WHO Quality of Life Assessment Brief (WHOQOL-BREF) were used before and after the intervention to measure participants’ anxiety, depression, and quality of life, and the participants’ anxiety, depression and quality of life changes before and after the intervention were compared. Results Before the intervention, in the hypnosis group, the average SAS score was (52.00±8.95), SDS score was (56.46±6.57), and WHOQOL-BREF score was (51.14±5.70), and in the control group, the average SAS score was (51.34±9.48), SDS score was (57.03±8.42), and WHOQOL-BREF score was (51.66±6.63), and there were no statistically significant differences between two groups(all P>0.05). Repeated measures of ANOVA after the intervention showed that the main effect of SAS score time, and the interaction between time and group were significant (F=493.03, 61.37, both P<0.001). The main effect of the SDS score, the interaction between time and group, and the main effect between groups were significant (F=225.01, 48.47, 8.21, all P<0.01). There were significant temporal main effects, intergroup main effects, temporal and group interactions in the dimensions of WHOQOL-BREF total score and physiological health, mental health, social relations, and environmental domains (F=278.01, 193.47, 29.68; 117.62, 70.36, 15.10; 147.51, 106.54, 18.71; 121.22, 84.83, 28.95; 193.34, 144.62, 12.99, all P<0.001). Conclusion Hypnotherapy can effectively improve the anxiety and depression of female college students with PMS and significantly improve their quality of life.
