Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between interpersonal forgiveness, self-esteem, and cyberbullying among college students, as well as the mediating role of self-esteem between interpersonal forgiveness and cyberbullying, and the role of gender moderation. Methods A total of 1 252 college students from 3 universities were selected by the stratified cluster sampling method. The interpersonal forgiveness scale, self-esteem scale, and cyberbullying scale were used for online assessment. SPSS macro program PROCESS was used to construct a moderated mediation model. Results Interpersonal forgiveness was negatively correlated with cyberbullying (r=-0.057, P<0.05), positive correlation with self-esteem (r=0.155, P<0.001), and self-esteem was negatively correlated with cyberbullying (r=-0.144, P<0.001). The indirect effect of interpersonal forgiveness in college students on cyberbullying through self-esteem as a mediator was significant, and the mediating effect value was -0.022 , and the proportion of mediation effect to the total effect was 37.85%. The moderated mediation effect test showed that interpersonal forgiveness positively predicted self-esteem (β=0.171, P<0.001), the interaction between self-esteem and gender had a significant predictive effect on cyberbullying (β=0.074, P=0.007), and the self-esteem of male college students was more closely related to cyberbullying than that of female college students . Conclusions Interpersonal forgiveness in college students significantly negatively predicts cyberbullying, self-esteem plays a part-mediating role in the relationship between interpersonal forgiveness and cyberbullying, and gender moderation is the second half of the mediation model of “interpersonal forgiveness → self-esteem → cyberbullying”.
