Ye Gongshao

Ye Gongshao (1908-1998), a hygienist, born in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, is renowned for her contributions to child and adolescent health and her significant impact on the profession. In her early years, she was engaged in maternal and child health work, and later focused on research on growth and development, physique, physical functioning and physical fitness of children and adolescents. Dr. Ye Gongshao graduated from the Department of Science at Yenching University in 1931, and earned her DM degree from Peking Union Medical College in 1935. In 1947, she pursued further studies in the United States and returned to China the following year. 

After 1950, Dr. Ye Gongshao successively held numerous key positions. As an educator, she held teaching positions at various institutions, including Beijing Normal University and Beijing Medical College. Her dedication to education has left a lasting legacy in the field. Also, she has served as the director of the Beijing Maternal and Infant Health Care Institute; the honorary director of Institute of Child and Adolescent Health, Peking University; executive director of the Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Society of Education; the chairperson of the Hygiene Society of the Chinese Medical Association; the deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Seventh Beijing Municipal Peoples Congress; a central committee member of the Jiusan Society during its sixth and seventh terms, and the deputy director of its Beijing Branch; member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth and Seventh National Committee of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference.
