Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among primary and secondary school students, as well as their characteristics of dietary habits and lifestyle, to provide evidence for early weight intervention. Methods From September to October 2020, students from 12 primary and secondary schools in the county were randomly sampled by cluster random sampling, and their dietary habits and lifestyle were investigated by measuring their height and weight, and the influencing factors of overweight and obesity were analyzed. Results The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 21.95% among 598 primary and secondary school students, 23.06% in urban areas and 16.89% in rural areas, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=24.86, P<0.001), 25.67% for boys and 15.20% for girls (χ2=88.24, P<0.001). There was a statistically significant association between dietary habits (eating fast food≥3 times/week, picky eating, frequent snacking, liking to drink sugary drinks, and eating supper frequently), and lifestyle (participating in physical activities in spare time with parents’ support, number of physical education classes per week, and sleep time per day) and overweight and obesity (P<0.05). Conclusion The dietary habits and lifestyle of overweight and obese primary and secondary school students are unreasonable, and early intervention is needed.
