Abstract:Objective To investigate the current situation of myopia among primary school students in Xinyang City, aiming to provide scientific evidence for the development of myopia intervention measures for students. Methods A total of 11 739 primary school students in eight counties and two districts of Xinyang City were selected by random stratified cluster sampling method for distance visual acuity examination by a 5-meter standard logarithmic eye chart, and for binocular refractive measurement by computerized optometry. Results The myopia rates of primary school students in Xinyang City were 39.73%, and the detection rates of low, medium, and high myopia were 32.39%, 6.31%, and 1.03%, respectively. The myopia rate of girls was 43.51% and that of boys was 36.54%, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=59.101, P<0.001). The myopia rate was 39.40% in suburban counties and 38.42% in urban areas, and the difference was not statistically significant (χ2=1.700, P>0.05). The myopia rates of students from grades 1 to 6 were 14.16%, 21.94%, 33.52%, 44.48%, 57.24%, and 64.28%, respectively, and the myopia rates among grades were statistically significantly different (χ2=1 569.323, P<0.001), and the myopia rate increased with the increase of grade level (χ2=1560.614, P<0.001). Conclusion The myopia rate of primary school students in Xinyang City increases with grade level, and targeted measures should be taken to control the occurrence and development of myopia among primary school students.
