Characteristics of age curves of different nutritional indexes and their correlation with blood pressure and pulse in primary and middle school students

Abstract:Objective To determine the age curve characteristics of different nutritional indexes and their correlation with blood pressure and pulse in primary and secondary school students. Methods The results of physical examinations were statistically analyzed by SPSS in primary and secondary school students in Suzhou City in 2017, for the means of nutrition indexes (BMI, Quetelet, Rohrer) in different ages, and the age curve characteristics of different nutrition indexes, and in addition, the correlations between the different nutritional indexes and blood pressure and pulse were investigated. Results BMI and Quetelet indexes increased with the age. Rohrer index started to decline with the age at 6 years, having a low of 13 years and a rise of 14 years, showing a "V" trend. The height, weight and different nutrition indexes were positively correlated with blood pressure (SBP, DBP) (P<0.01). BMI and Quetelet index were negatively related to the pulse (P<0.01), and Rohrer index was positively related to the pulse (P<0.01). Conclusion The age curves of BMI and Quetelet indexes are consistent with the classic researches, while the age curves of Rohrer index is not consistent with the classic ones. Overweight and obesity are risk factors of hypertension, and different nutritional indexes are positively correlated with blood pressure (SBP has a higher correlation than DBP), which ranked from high to low are Quetelet, BMI and Rohrer. The results of different nutritional indexes and pulse correlation analysis are inconsistent.
